Hailing from Long Beach Island, New Jersey, I'm a new member awaiting delivery of a new BR20.  Very excited to receive the boat which will be an unusual sight over here.  I've ordered her with the flying jib set up on the American rig thanks to the Forum exchanges on rigging alternatives. Not only will she be perfect for our sailing conditions on Barnegat Bay, but the extra salty look of her rig will make her stand out. Looking forward to trouncing the Flying Scots and mostly anything else in the 20 ft range.
Love the Forum and learning a lot; thanks for sharing.  Hoping to come over sometime for a "raid".

This will be the best investment you have ever made (bar the spouse is you have one of course) every time i sail my BR20 i get a buzz from being the owner of such a pretty, technically capable, and safe boat. I mostly reservoir sail her being so far from the coast but some trips under my belt now in this type of craft off the English and French coast.

I was out on the water with Andy Dingle in his BR20 WE version and he has installed a flying jib on her, on the right points of sail it definitely turbo charges the boat, reefing is still a bit of a problem as the spinnaker pole bends which takes the tension of the luff and on our last outing the reefing drum line got tangled. Andy is looking at a downhaul tension now for the pole.
With all sails up she does look very "salty" and will give you the edge on the other 20 footers in your stomping grounds.

Best Wishes

Peter, thanks so much for your response and reminder to value the spouse above all else. She too is anxious for the delivery as she has been subjected to sailing our treacherous waters on a Hunter 212; a notoriously ill mannered swing keel affair.  We tested a BR20on Cape Cod last fall and ordered the boat the next week.
Hoping others hemispherically challenged (Yanks) see this and let me know where they are; think of the first N American raiding party.
Will let you know how the flying jib works out soon after delivery.

Rock Doctor

LBI,
welcome to the BR20 brigade, there are two of us in Western Australia plus three or four others on the east coast. We in the Antipodes also feel we are hemispherically challenged especially when we read about those in UK sailing amongst the ice blocks in UK when we are enjoying nearly year round sailing an generally balmy weather.

You will not regret your BR20 purchase. One thing I have noticed, and you have alluded to, is the extreme interest in our boats when we launch and sail them due to their quite unusual design and appearance. We sail with a bunch of similar craft including Ness and Caledonia Yawls, Welsford Navigators and Pathfinders and when the "fleet" assembles for a raid or regatta (we sail with the WA Old Gaffers) and always there is a highly interested bunch of observers.

Enjoy your BR20 and we will wait with interest to hear about your thoughts re the bowsprit/flying jib arrangement.

Hey LBI
I used to live in Tom's River just up the street from you. On Silver Bay. Nice sailing in that area. I had a nice couple of sails up to Connecticut.
I am now over in San Diego. I also have the BayRaider 20. But with the gaff rig set up. Very happy with my boat.
Let me know if you have any "West Coast" plans and we can enjoy a sail.

David.

LBI:

I sail my BayCruiser 20 mostly on Lake Superior out of Duluth, MN. Our boat is not so raid-capable but I may be feeling the need soon to trailer her to less hard water. I think it will be June before the ice is off of Gitche Gumee.

another one - this time in Rhode Island...

Ordered the boat with bermudan rig - teak sprit and bobstay
and permanent forestay - the seats are teak too which i think looks
great - all teak will remain unfinished.

Been looking at this forum for a while and a great resource - running rigging
is dyneema and so came here for info on that found a bit and the great link to
colligo for the re-tightening after the first few sails...

Boat is great - hadn't really considered the non self-tending jib but now the jib does look pretty
tiny and flat up there...weather helm is not overwhelming and I don't like the lee helm at all  so I'll sail this way for a bit....

Hello all!

SFbaysailor

Not an owner... Yet.....;-) Located in San Francisco Bay Area. My wife and I have sort of done the small, medium, big thing and I miss the Little/ medium sailing.

Does anyone know or have contact info for Martyn Miles of Sligo Ireland? I would like to Hi.. We are headed to Ireland in early December there is one Bay Raider listed in Sligo Ireland very close to were we will be for a couple of days. Granted in the winter!!! But I would love to see one of these boats up close, even if its on the trailer stowed for the winter.

Even better if we had a California BayRaider Expedition owner near home.

My favorite boat was our locally built Ron Moore Ultimate 20 #27. I raced and then owned from 1998 through 2011. Kids and life resulted in no time to race or sail it. Our tubby family cruiser at the club is just not doing it either. Trying to find the right balance, between, stored at home, quick trips to trailer sailing locations, quick set up, and fun sailing performance. The BayRaider seems to excell in these areas.

The U20 class seems very similar to the Swallowboat owners. Very friendly and plays a big role in exposing people to the boats. I cant count the number of people I took sailing who were interested in the U20. My hope is I can luck out and cross paths with a BayRaider owner at some point.

Thankyou

I am in San Diego. I have a BayRaider. Just does not have the lid but is similar  in sail handling. Let me know, pm, if you will be in the area! Always  fun to sail in  company.

David it would be fun to catch up with you at some point. We do head South during Spring Break along with everyone else ;-) We spent a few days at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club last March. Prior to kids I did the SD NOOD Regatta every year. I've had my fill of the One Design Racing madness and Ocean racing fun. My oldest goes into the Jr's program at RYC next summer and I'm starting to think there are enough West Coast sailors that would do lower key Raid Style events I've been wondering if I could get something going in the SF BAY. I know a bunch of burnt out OD racers who still want to do some low key semi organized gatherings LOL.

Though our Potter Yachters up here in Northern CA are extremely active and more or less have very Raid like gatherings through out the year. Though I struggle with the idea of a Potter given they are just a box with a mast slapped on top. LOL I prefer something that looks like a proper sailboat.

If you head north with your boat let me know! For sure would like to cross paths with you and see your boat.
