For Sale: Swallow Yachts BayRaider Expedition, "Mallory"

Mallory has a two-colour, blue over cream, hull with cream sails and teak-stained hardwood. All aspects of the boat are in excellent condition - Mallory has been thoroughly maintained, trailer-sailed and stored in an enclosed, dry barn when not used. She was the BRe show boat at the London Boat Show in 2012 and featured in Practical Boat Owner's review of the BRe. Mallory includes extensive standard options and subsequent upgrades (e.g. improved jib setup, dyneema halyards, 12v system, cockpit tent, electric & manual ballast pumps, etc) to improve the sailing and support extended day sails and longer cruises. We have spent many happy and comfortable days and nights on board Mallory, including 8 days cruising from Weymouth to Chichester Harbour with our 2 children (carrying all food and sleeping on board) in 2016. We're buying a BayCruiser so, sadly, Mallory is now for sale and can be viewed in south Dorset (or at Sail Caledonia in Scotland in late May).

We are asking £19,500 for Mallory. This is a significant discount compared to a fully specified new boat (and means you get a BRe this season!) and Mallory comes truly ready to sail with all the options and modifications needed for day sailing and longer cruises. For more information please reply to this post, send me a private message or email me at jonathan-at-jdstuart.com (of course, replace "-at-" with "@"). Mallory will be available from the beginning of June 2017 (because she is entered in Sail Caledonia at the end of May) but potential buyers are welcome to view her before then and I'll commit to a sale and reserve Mallory if you do decide to buy before June.

Full Specification:
  • Two-colour hull: dark blue and white, never antifouled.
  • Beige sprayhood and sail bag.
  • Storage bags for cabin (large bow bag plus port & starboard storage) and cockpit. Photo shows side bags and chart storage but not bow bag.
  • Cockpit sleeping slats. These roll out to create an area for 2 adults to sleep in the cockpit.
  • UV strip on jib & mizzen.
  • Braked trailer (brakes & bearings serviced annually) with spare wheel, lighting board, mud flaps and pneumatic jockey wheel (easier use on gravel, etc). Additional small roller fitted to swing beam to prevent bow becoming wedged against this during recovery.
  • Rubbing strip (stained "teak", as is all hardwood).
  • Permateak seating in cockpit.
  • Dark blue cabin cushions (Sunbrella acrylic canvas – tougher & more water proof than standard BRe cushion material).
  • Oarlocks & two-piece 10' oars with extensions pieces lengthening the oars to 11' and 12'.
  • Spinlock jammers for halyards, etc, on cabin roof.
  • Aft aluminium hoop to support cockpit tent & act as boom gallows.
  • Cockpit tent (WeatherMax fabric, custom-made by Kemp Sails in 2016) - see photo. 4-section tent for easy storage and flexible configuration (e.g. open sides), completely encloses cockpit. Rear section folds flat & can be left in place while sailing; remaining sections zip-in between this and the sprayhood.
  • Suzuki 2.5hp outboard plus fuel tanks designed for motorbike overland expeditions (ample power and capacity, e.g. drove boat from Weymouth to Poole when wind failed!).
  • Spinlock tiller extension.
  • Dyneema main & jib halyards. Also, clam cleat installed for main halyard to add extra security to the Spinlock jammer or when a third hand would be useful!
  • Wireless depth sounder / fish finder & integration with apps on smartphone / tablet (Android or Apple).
  • Moveable Rule electric pump for emptying water ballast (pump fixes in ballast tank) and aft sump. Ballast tank empties in approximately 5 minutes.
  • 12v electric system: Small enclosure fitted in cabin (see photo) containing 22AH lithium ion battery, fuses, four 12v sockets and master switches for depth sounder and bilge pump. Space for further electrics if required.
  • Stainless steel strips fitted to leading edge of rudder and centreboard for protection.
  • Cunningham fitted on mainsail.
  • Standard self-bailers replaced with improved model (external mounted Andersen Mini).
  • Dual Whale Urchin bilge pumps (port and starboard in crossover arrangement) to enable helmsman to pump the leeward side of sump on both tacks.
  • Hawk wind vane.
  • Fixed lazyjacks replaced with adjustable version (same design as BC23, i.e. via cheek blocks just below mast shroud attachments and routed to Spinlock jammer on cabin roof). Topping lift eases mainsail handling (esp. when raising mainsail) & the position of the boom attachments makes it harder for sail battens to spill outside the lines when raising the sail.
  • Extensive improvements to self-tacking jib for ease of use & improved performance, especially in light winds and when reaching to running, while retaining the benefits of self-tacking jib (short-handed sailing, no winch required, jib sail shape, etc):
    1. Topping lift fitted to jib boom. Jib outhaul can be adjusted without affecting forestay tension & jib boom can't drop to side decks when jib furled.
    2. Re-routed jib sheets to Harken blocks on mast tabernacle and on shroud bases. Significantly reduces friction allowing the sheets to run more freely in light airs and when running. Jib can also be sheeted harder when close hauled (useful and a recommendation in PBO's review).
    3. Barton jib furling drum replaced with Selden Furlex 40S – a generally better unit but, in particular, the furling line can "jump out" of the Barton drum.
    4. Jib sheet deck clip under jib boom replaced with Harken block – jib sheet runs better, especially when jib well out.
    5. Twisted shackle between jib boom rope strop and stem head replaced with swivel shackle to enable jib boom to swivel more freely, i.e. without twisting the rope.
    6. Fitted Harken swivel block on jib furling line so the block is always at the right angle for the line at all jib boom positions.
    7. Original deck clip used to attach jib furler to jib boom replaced with larger U-bolt to raise the furling drum and prevent it touching jib boom when jib outhaul tight.
    8. Removed 2:1 outhaul on jib to prevent over tightening of outhaul.
  • Chart storage on cabin ceiling (matrix of bungee cord) large enough for Admiralty A2-size folios. Additional bungee cords on port & starboard side of cabin roof for general storage. Cabin storage (except bow bag) shown in photos.
  • Centre board setup (inside the centreboard case) improved to make it significantly easier to raise: aft blocks replaced with Harken bearing blocks; forward block replaced with Sprenger needle block (reduced friction while ensuring the block can handle the load - a ball bearing block wouldn't); 8mm uphaul replaced with 6mm because original 8mm was too big for blocks; re-routed line not to use deck clip (further significantly reduced friction).
  • Centreboard bullseye (for uphaul rope) replaced with better fitting version to reduce water ingress when sailing in a swell.
  • Teak in-fills fitted to port & starboard coming gaps where jib & mizzen sheets exit the cockpit - see photo. These prevent water flowing in to the cockpit from side decks when healing in choppy seas (otherwise water "caught" on windward side deck flows aft and the boat's heel sends it in to cockpit through these gaps). This and the centreboard bullseye change make the BRe's cockpit far drier, which is very welcome when camping on the boat!
  • Added two gunwale scuppers on each side & enlarged existing to make water flow more effectively off side decks.
  • Bolt that attached gooseneck to boom replaced with drop nose pin so the gooseneck remains attached to the boom rather than the mast when the boom is removed. Ensures the gooseneck can't hit the companionway hatch when the mast is lowered.
  • Spacers fitted to reduce rudder play so it doesn't "flop" side-to-side in light winds.
  • Mizzen sheet blocks upgraded to Harken 29mm.
  • Hardwood retainer added below companionway to support the washboards better.
  • Kicker re-routed via block on tabernacle's aft port mount to eliminated twist in lower block.
  • Supports to hold open cockpit lockers.
  • Portable mount to use lower washboard as a table supported on the centreboard.
  • Hardwood trim on aft end of companionway hatch.
