Message from Lara

Great news! We have been speaking to the wonderful people at Mylor and have set some dates for the 2021 Raid.

Dates as follows:
Check in/launch Monday 7th June 2021
Sailing Tues - Thurs
Recover, depart Friday 11th June 2021

We will be offering the same catering options as last year, ie packed lunches and evening meals at Castaways come with the sailing package, and you can opt to have breakfast there also.

Windsport will be available for camping and camper vans.

Cost to be confirmed as we have to discuss rates with the harbour and the restaurant but we never make a profit, we just cover costs, and we will always endeavour to keep the cost as low as possible and keep any annual increases negligible.

We have given first refusal to people who had booked for the cancelled 2020 Raid so available places are more limited than usual.  So please be quick if you'd like to come and email events@swallowyachts.com to book your space, and please include the number of crew (including skipper).  Please don't comment here to reserve a place, we are taking bookings by email only.

Of course we do have to mention that if things don't relax considerably then we won't be able to run the Raid this year and will have to cancel it again - that's the last thing we want but we do have to keep everyone safe!  Therefore we will be delaying asking for deposits until Easter at the earliest.

A particular point we would like to raise is that Castaways is fairly "cosy" and we will be sat close together for our evening meal. We won't be offering non-dining spaces so please do consider this when you are deciding whether you wish to attend the Raid.

We look forward to hearing from you and wish you all a great 2021
Jonathan

Good morning everyone, just to let you know that the Raid is fully booked but you can email events@swallowyachts.com to be placed on the waiting list in case spaces become available - thank you!

This is the first time in years that all five sections of the forum have had a post on the same day.  And unfortunately this one is bad news - Covid has put paid to the raid at Mylor in June.  Thank you to the organisers for trying to make it happen against all the odds.  And looking forward to next year's event!

It would be interesting to know the reason for the cancellation. I'm sure the cancellation must be seen as necessary, but what is the reason? That we are unable to socialise off the boats? Or that the moorings/pontoons are unavailable?

I was only wait-listed for a place. But now perhaps I can and will go anyway, as I believe there will be no impediment to my sailing out of Mylor. I'm very willing to be corrected however! And to wave at other Swallows should they be encountered  ;)

I think the reason given is "June was too early for Castaways to be able to host us in the annex due to spacing issues"

Firstly, very many thanks for all the hard work done on the 2021 raid so far; we are already looking forward to 2022 - in more ways than one!

I think that all things considered, the Swallow raid may well be a lot more pleasant in 2022, than this summer?

Last summer here was incredibly busy, and all the quiet coves and beaches that we would normally frequent were fully occupied.
Pulling the boat up on the beach was out of the question.

For example, we sailed up to Kingsand/Cawsand and as we rounded Rame on the way in, Plymouth Sound looked like the Solent...on an August weekend. We were unable to see any shore line at all, due the thick forest of yachts anchored off;  We went away, without attempting to find room to anchor....I'm not telling to where  ;)

This year will be busier.
Practically everything (accommodation wise) in Cornwall is already fully booked, right through to October.

Tip: Be sure to check availability before travelling down - even the marinas/visitors moorings are getting booked up.

See you in 2022?

Raid 2021 CANCELLED

It seems that not everyone got the message about the Raid 2021 Raid being cancelled, possibly only the people who actually had a place. Just so everyone knows, Mark Darley is posting it on Facebook (beyond my ken) and here is the actual email from the Raid organisers:

Good afternoon everyone

It's with much regret that we are contacting you to let you know that the Raid cannot go ahead this year after all.

Following the Covid roadmap issued by the Prime Minister last month, the date we had earmarked in June was too early for Castaways to be able to host us in the annex due to spacing issues.

We did find another date in July when the tides were right, the camping facility was available and Castaways would be able to host us, but the marina are booked out for July and August and not taking any more bookings.

So unfortunately it's not going to be possible this year.  We are so sorry about this and thank you for your patience in waiting for us to try to sort out a solution.

You will be offered a place for the 2022 Raid a week before bookings open early next year, so you will get first refusal

Kind regards

Although the official meeting was unfortunately cancelled, some Swallow Boats had a most enjoyable week in Mylor anyway.  Other Swallow Boats were also see out and about around the harbour.  Even Mr Johnson made a surprise visit to the Swallow Boats docked on the Mylor pontoon one evening.  Mylor was busy but not frantic and most of the week Ella's crew and I were the only people staying on the campsite.
Let us hope more Swallow Boats can meet at Mylor next year.

Either there is a new event or this one is re-instated, date and venue moved. Surprised not to see a mention of it (best I can see) on the forum, I have started a new topic.

If I knew how, or if I had the necessary forum privilege, I would change the topic title from "Swallow Yachts Raid 2021 ***CANCELLED***" to "Swallow Yachts Raid 2021 ***RE-SCHEDULED***

Sorry to miss those of you who did turn up for the cancelled Mylor Swallow meet 2021.  On Thursday I was around the corner getting ready for the Falmouth Classic (Friday through the weekend) which I had previously not entered as the two events ran over each other.
We had rented a house in Flushing, so I commuted with my tender across the river to Falmouth to my berth at Greenbanks.  To our surprise one evening (possibly the same day he visited Mylor) Mr Johnson very nearly ran us down in a modern Pilot Cutter as he went up the river.  We thought they were going to stop us and ask for our passports (seriously) when he waved from the wheelhouse.  We could have easliy lobbed anything from high explosives to an apple on board.  We decided to ignore him as they could easliy have run us down,  but the dinghy behind us gave him full forearm french salutes, the finger and jeers!  Free expression is a right....  They didn't run them down!  The Cornish did not appreciate "foreigners" taking over St Ives and Falmouth!
